UKRAINIAN SOCIAL AND CULTURAL LIFE IN PEREMYSHL (END OF THE 20TH – BEGINNING OF THE 21ST CENTURY)

Abstract

The article analyzes the peculiarities of Ukrainian social and cultural life in Przemyśl during the period of democratic changes in post-communist Poland, considers the infl uence of the government and the public of independent Ukraine on these processes. The activation of Ukrainian socio-cultural associations of Nadsyannia, primarily regional structures of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland, is highlighted; revival of national-cultural and church-religious traditions in the border area by holding various festivals and holidays in the community hall (Narodny dim) and other locations of Nadsyan with the participation of art groups from Poland, Ukraine and other countries. It has been proven that the First Congress of Przemyśl residents on June 23–24, 1994, held by the Przemyśl branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland, was a consolidation event for local Ukrainians. Considered signifi - cant events that took place in the community hall of Przemyśl in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The role of the South-Eastern Scientifi c Institute, where Ukrainian studies have been conducted for more than three decades, is highlighted. The activities of the parishes of the restored Peremysk Diocese of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, their participation in the national-patriotic education of the faithful, in particular during the Green Holiday marches to the Rifl emen’s Memorial in Pykulychy, were considered. It has been proven that regular Ukrainian-Polish social, cultural and political events contributed to the establishment of good-neighborly relations. The activities of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland in Przemyśl as part of volunteer activities, helping Ukrainian refugees, many of whom found shelter in the Ukrainian community hall in 2022, were analyzed. According to the materials of the article, it is proven that the border town is now one of the important centers of the Ukrainian community of the neighboring state, in particular, its cultural, educational and public-political life.
