Abstract

The article analyses participation of Ukrainian students’ organisations in social and political life of Eastern Galicia and, consequently, in the processes of Ukrainian nation-building in the late 19th century. It focuses on the following political orientations of the youth organisations: populists (narodovtsi), Russohiles, and “independents” (samostiinyky). The article discusses influence of older generation of politicians on their activities and examines an attempt of students to consolidate their efforts in a struggle for the Ukrainian state, while also offering reasons of the struggle’s failure.
